Energy Star Refrigerators

When you have decided to start shopping for a new refrigerator, all of the choices on the market can be overwhelming. There are many different types and brands of refrigerators available, and you must carefully consider the pros and cons of each one that you are interested in. One way to narrow down the field is by only looking at Energy Star refrigerators. These appliances have several benefits to consumers and are well worth considering. Their efficiency saves electricity, water and money, and they provide the additional bonus of protecting the environment. Refrigerator reviews show that consumers are very happy with their Energy Star refrigerators.

When you choose an Energy Star refrigerator, you still have many refrigerator styles and brands to choose from. Side-by-side models, bottom-freezer combos and top-freezer combos are all available with the Energy Star label. You must simply evaluate your needs and your budget before determining whether or not to purchase an energy-efficient refrigerator.

Reduce Energy Usage, Reduce Bills and Save the Environment

An Energy Star refrigerator uses much less energy than its non-energy efficient counterparts, and the government requires any refrigerator with this label to use at least 20% less energy than those without the Energy Star label. Although the requirement is set at only 20%, some Energy Star refrigerators may cut energy usage by up to 40%, especially when they replace older appliances. An Energy Star refrigerator is specially designed to keep products colder without using extra electricity. The compressors run more smoothly and efficiently, and additional insulation prevents warm air from coming in while trapping cold air inside. Energy Star refrigerators also have the ability to defrost automatically to prevent ice and frost from building up and blocking airways.

Since an Energy Star refrigerator uses less energy, electric bills are often reduced once the appliance has been installed. The same design that allows food to stay cold with less energy usage keeps electrical costs lower than traditional refrigerators. When an Energy Star refrigerator is combined with other Energy Star appliances, such as washers, dryers and dishwashers, the electrical savings can be significant, sometimes as much as 50%. Reports state that households that have used energy-efficient appliances have saved up to $2,000 each to date.

Energy Star refrigerators are designed to keep the environment as clean as possible. The refrigerators emit less carbon emissions in order to help protect the atmosphere. Their energy efficient design allows consumers to become more independent of fossil fuels. It also helps to reduce the dependency on foreign oil.

Energy Star refrigerators are more expensive for the initial purchase. However, the amount that consumers will save in their electric bills will compensate for the higher up front costs. The benefits for the environment also help to make the price tag worth it.

Another benefit of using Energy Star appliances is the Energy Star Rebate Package. Initially enacted as a Tax Credit, this rebate allows consumers to regain a portion of the purchase cost of the refrigerator or other Energy Star appliances. Consumers may also be eligible for utility rebates for using Energy Star appliances in their homes.

Caring for an Energy Star Refrigerator

When you have spent money on a long-term investment such as a refrigerator, you want to make sure to care for it properly in order to get the best use from it. Proper care will keep it running properly for the life of the appliance, and it will also ensure that the refrigerator continues to run using less energy. This is especially important for refrigerators because they run constantly.

Keep the refrigerator in a cool place. If it gets too warm, the refrigerator will have to work harder to keep its contents cool. Do not place it next to a window or in direct sunlight. You should also not place other heat producing appliances, such as microwaves or ovens near the Energy Star refrigerator.

Leave some space between the refrigerator and the wall. The back of the refrigerator contains all of the working parts that keep the appliance running. If it is touching the wall, the refrigerator does not have enough space for air to circulate properly and it can get too warm. When it gets too warm, it has to expend more energy to keep the proper temperature inside. You may also want to lightly vacuum the back of the refrigerator regularly to keep it clean.

Clean the condenser coils regularly to remove dust, grime and buildup. This will allow air to circulate properly and extend the life of the refrigerator. After unplugging the appliance, remove the plate that protects the condenser coils. You may need a screwdriver to get the plate free. Carefully vacuum the coils to remove any dust or debris. Replace the plate and plug the refrigerator back in. To keep the refrigerator running efficiently, clean the coils at least twice a year. It may need it more often if you have pets or live in a dry, dusty environment.

Each time you check the coils, test the seal on the refrigerator door. Simply close a dollar bill in the door and close it. If you can pull the bill out easily, your refrigerator is not air tight and will not be energy-efficient. Replace the seals to prolong the life of your appliance and keep food at the proper temperature.

Monitor the internal temperature of the refrigerator. It should be between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit for optimum energy-efficient performance. The freezer, if there is one, should be set at 0 degrees Fahrenheit. If you keep the refrigerator any cooler, it will require more energy to run and will not provide the expected savings. Lower temperatures could also shorten the life of your refrigerator because it will have to run more frequently to keep food cooler.

Don’t leave the refrigerator door open for long periods of time. Arrange food and drinks so that the vents and airways are not obstructed. Try to keep items in approximately the same place so that you do not have to stand with the door open trying to find what you are looking for. These measures will keep out warmer air while allowing the cold air to circulate thoroughly around the refrigerator.

Energy Star appliances are well worth their initial cost. Carefully shop for the refrigerator that fits your needs and read refrigerator reviews to help you discover the pros and cons of each model.
